Yes, study of the arts can enhance your child’s academic performance . . . and so much more! You’ve likely heard how studying the arts helps improve children’s academic performance. But how about the intrinsic benefits of the arts―those non-quantifiable skills kids can learn through an art practice? Over the past 45 years at Place des Arts, we’ve seen first-hand the power of the arts to transform children’s lives. But don’t take our word for it! We did a little digging and found this study by Ellen Winner and Lois Hetland published in the Boston Globe that lists 7 top intrinsic benefits of the arts:1. Persistence: Persevering through frustration and developing a never-say-die attitude; 2. Expression: Moving beyond technical skill to create works full of feeling and atmosphere;3. Connection making: Building connections between our art practice and the outside world;4. Noticing: Discovering that things may be more or different than they appear;5. Visualization: Bringing our mental images to life through form;6. Innovation: Experimenting through exploration, taking risks;7. Self-evaluation: Stepping back and viewing our project analytically. For kids (or anyone for that matter), the benefits derived from participating in the arts are translatable to just about anything they choose to do in life.
